The European Commission has launched a new call for proposals to enhance ultra-fast, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure. This new set of calls includes 5G coverage along transport corridors (€100 million); 5G and Edge Cloud for Smart Communities (€51 million); and backbone connectivity for Digital Global Gateways (€90 million), for a total of more than €240 million.
The calls aim to improve 5G connectivity in both rural and urban areas and develop 5G infrastructure along European transport corridors. This call also tries to support backbone connections to improve connectivity networks on islands and seaside regions via submarine cables.
All these measures are in harmony with the EU Global Gateway strategy to increase the capacity and resiliency of its digital networks. The deadline to apply to these calls for proposals is 17 January 2024, with further information being released on online info day on the 26th of October 2023.
