The European Commission has earmarked €84 million for initiatives aimed at fortifying artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity under the Digital Europe Programme. The funding will support Security Operation Centres in deploying innovative AI applications and other enabling technologies. The focus extends to implementing EU cybersecurity legislation, notably the Cyber Resilience Act, and facilitating the transition to post-quantum cryptography in Europe.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a Europe fit for the Digital Age, emphasized the imperative role of cybersecurity in the face of escalating cyber threats. She stated, “With the magnitude of cyberthreats increasing exponentially, cybersecurity is a must-have. This call for supporting technologies will help the EU invest to protect us as citizens, our societies and our economy.”
Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, underscored the importance of detection speed in responding effectively to cyber threats. The investment will prioritize novel AI applications and other enabling technologies to enhance the European Security Operation Centre (SOC) infrastructure, aiming for a robust European cyber shield.
The calls for proposals are open to businesses, SMEs, public administrations, and other entities from EU Member States, EFTA/EEA countries, and countries associated with the Digital Europe Programme. The European Cybersecurity Competence Centre (ECCC) will manage the projects funded by this call.
